How to Protect Ultra-Wide Openings from Flooding?

Project Background and Key Challenges

ITW INTERNATIONAL HOLDINGS LLC. is located on Jinchun East Road, Minhang District, in a low-lying area. During heavy rainfall or extreme weather events, critical facilities such as the injection molding workshop, storage areas, and power distribution rooms face a severe risk of water backflow. Once flooding occurs, it can directly lead to equipment damage and production interruptions.

However, the site faced two major flood protection challenges:

∙ Challenge 1: Ultra-wide openings cannot be protected. Some building openings are far wider than the applicable range of conventional flood barriers, making standard solutions ineffective.

∙ Challenge 2: Penetrations create flood vulnerabilities. There are numerous penetrations on external walls and floors, including pipelines, cable trays, and ventilation ducts. Even if doors are sealed, floodwater can still infiltrate through these penetration points, rendering the defense ineffective.

Technical Solution: Dual Protection System

Based on the FM 1-40 flood risk control standard, this project adopts a comprehensive dual protection system of “building opening protection + penetration sealing,” fundamentally eliminating both vulnerabilities.

① Building Opening Protection — FD-02 Quick-fit Buckled Flood Door (FM Approved)

∙ Full coverage for ultra-wide openings, adaptable to various opening sizes

∙ Quick installation design without tools; a single operator can independently complete deployment and removal, significantly improving emergency response efficiency

② Flood Sealing for Penetration Points

∙ Covers penetrations of pipelines, cable trays, and ventilation ducts on external walls, floors, and equipment foundations

∙ Forms a complete and continuous building flood protection barrier together with the flood door system, completely eliminating water ingress blind spots

Performance Verification

After completion, the system underwent both static water retention tests and dynamic spray tests on site. The measured sealing performance significantly exceeded standard requirements. All tested doors showed no visible leakage and successfully passed joint acceptance.

Client Feedback

The client highly recognized the product quality, delivery efficiency, on-site safety management, and professional service provided in this project.
